Major power loss under wide open throttle

Hi I have a 1995 Ford Mustang Gt 5.0 5 spd with 75k miles on it.

Recently A problem emerged that has me baffled.

When driving under normal conditions, the car drives fine, shifts smoothly etc, but when I apply power, whether it be merging on the freeway, speeding up to change lanes or anything else, the car feels like it is driving into a 200 mph head wind.

The engine and rpms go up, but the car struggles to accelerate.

I was told it was probably the clutch slipping, because the power from the engine was being lost in the transition to the wheels, but my mechanic said it was my mass air sensor, and sparkplugs.

I need to know what the problem is so I can have it properly fixed.

Sounds like the tranny. Since the rpm's are going up then quite obviously the engine can put out the power. Its just being lost on the wya to the wheels.

My mechanic disconnected the mass air flow sensor and I test drove it, and all the power was there. When he reconnected it, the power loss returned.

So basically I just need a new mass air flow sensor.

I'm glad I didnt go ahead and replace the clutch.

You may not need to replace the sensor. I had that issue too. I instead bought the hex allen wrench set with the special hole in the center and took the sensor off my self. There was just a tiny little bit of dirt on the sensor. I carefully cleaned it and it ran like new.
