Service station wants to do a rear differential service. Is this necessary and why?

Hi there, it is not a bad practice to change the diff oil, like all oils it breaks down and becomes dirty, it will also carry in suspension small metal particles, normal wear from the gears, get it changed it will be of benefit in the long term.
