2002 Ford Focus Location or troubleshoot

I have a 2002 Ford Focus SE. I have purchased the temperature sensor but can not locate it location. I'm not sure if it's going to fix my problem either mayble you could help with suggestions. While the car is running my temp. Gauge needle stays in the middle, but after a couple minutes it drops out rather quickly which then causes the engine to idle high thus causing the engine to beging to stall. It even drops our while your driving. Could you help me at all with this? Thanks.
