2002 Ford Focus Gasket Oil Leak

I was informed at the Ford dealership where I got an oil change that I have a small oil leak and that it was the gasket that was causing the leak and needs to be replaced. They then told me it would cost about $950 in replairs (work + labor). Well I nearly fainted since its about 1/5 of the worth of the car.
How long do you think the leak will remain minor (how long do I until it becomes more severe)?
Also, would it be cheaper to get it repaired elsewhere, I have heard the dealerships are always more expensive?

As we do not know which gasket. We cannot comment on the price quoted. However dealers are nearly alway's the most expensive shop to carry out repairs. They use OEM parts and dealer trained tech's. That is not to say that other shops are not just as good, some are some are not. Luck of the draw
