2001 Ford Focus 4 cyl Automatic 110000 miles

My car smells hot but doesn't actually overheat. Sometimes the gauge will go to hot, stay there for a minute or two, then go back down to mid-range again. It especially does this if the car is idling in a drive-thru or a stop light. The fan does run loud when it runs. Any ideas what this could be?

Check coolant if low
if so check for leaks
also suspect and check thermostat operation
