Vehicle is 1999 Ford F250 4x4 with about 79,000 miles. The manual says not to use a fluid for dual use such (Mercon and Mercon V). Specifications say to use Motorcraft Mercon ATF, can just Mercon V be used? Is the dual use they speak of the ability to use the fluid to replace something other than transmission fluid?

Thanks

could blow seals not good! drain with a pump you can attach to a drill and use appropriate rubber hose as required with trans/hydraulic fluid--check with parts store on hose type

I think dual use means that the manufacturer claims the fluid can be used in fords and gms.

Suggested Repair

Use Motorcraft Mercon ATF as specified. Do not use Mercon V or dual-use Mercon/Mercon V fluid, which can damage seals and harm the transmission. If draining the fluid, use a drill-mounted pump with the correct hose recommended by a parts store.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1999 Ford F-250 4x4 asked whether Mercon V could replace specified Motorcraft Mercon ATF and what dual-use fluid means. Experts advised against Mercon V, saying it can blow seals and had damaged a similar truck, and recommended Motorcraft Mercon ATF. One expert said dual-use means the fluid is claimed to work in both Ford and GM applications, and a drill pump with proper hose was suggested for draining.
