I cannot open the hood. Cable appears to function correctly. Any ideas on how to release the hood?

For my 2002 I either use someone to hold the hood release lever or if I'm by myself I go to either front corner and pull on it from there. Sometimes hitting the hood, with your hand, in the front center of the hood seems to work at times as well. Obviously no one should have to do these things but if you have more time than money then.
