I just bought a ford f-250 1969 as is. I tuned it up, wires, plugs, dist. Cap. Etc. It turns on right away and it has power but the fumes coming out of the tail pipe are so strong it makes your eyes burn. I think it's the carburator because the exaust pipe is also coughing. Can you tell me how to adjust the jets and the idle. I appiciate your help. Thanks

Hi there,

The jets will be a fixed size, you can adjust the idle mixture but first you have to ensure that the carby is in good condition, with no excessive wear in the throttle valve and no vacuum leaks anywhere, also the float height will need to checked, best to get a manual for this engine as it will give you detailed instructions on doing this tricky set & adjustment, if OK, turn the mixture screw in till it runs rough, then slowly turn out till it evens out, keep going till it runs rough, then back till it evens out, this is best mixture with out any test gear, set idle as required, but first ensure all tune items are OK, carby settings are the last thing on a tune up, also best ensure that all comps are OK, as if not you will be wasting your time trying to do the tune.
