Ford Truck starting

HI! I have a 1994 f150 PU, 108,000 mi. And 8 cyl.
My problem is that I cannot start the truck and put it in drive. The car starts but won't shift. However I can turn the key halfway--put the truck in neutral--start it, then go about my way---But when I put it back in park, I have to go over the same process again.

I HAD a problem with my f150 not shifting into gear after being started. I could turn the key halfway then neutral then start it and shift but after park I would have to do the same process over. Zi found the problem to be with the trailer hitch and it's wiring. Some wires had gotten pinched and were exposed, so I spliced them back together and viola!
