My 2001 f150 will crank but when I try to give it gas is starts sputtering and dies. Then it won't crank again for a while. I changed fuel filter, checked fuel pump, checked coil. Fuel pump pumping strong and coil has correct resistance. Could this be caused by cam sensor or crank sensor or do I need to start somewhere else?

You wouldn't believe what the problem was. I got to checking sensors and just going over every inch of the engine trying to find a reasonable excuse for the way the truck was acting. What I found was the harmonic balancer had slung loose and slid back on the shaft and literally rubbed the crankshaft position sensor until it grounded out causing eratic firing.
