Two questions in one: First, is it typical for someone to have to remove part of the exhaust system to remove a transmission? Real question: I recently bought a '97 Ford F150 from a friend who claimed it was in running condition. Then he claimed there was a problem with the transmission and removed it, taking a good chunk of the exhaust system with it and effectively destroying it by cutting the pipes. He left it at his brother-in-law's house and instead of fixing it just abandoned it and I had to come have it towed. I want to put a transmission in just to get the truck started so I can find out if there is anything else wrong with it--is it possible to even temporarily pop in a working transmission from a 95 F150? Both are automatic and 4x4 but mine is a V6 and the other is a V8. Thanks!

Actually, if it will bolt up, you could try it, but honestly, we recommend staying with direct fit parts. Between 95 and 97, there were a lot of changes made. I'm not sure it will work but you could try.

Please make sure that you get the correct trans for the truck for your final choice.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Here's the issue--it looks like the transmission I need is hard to find. The truck is a '97 V6 4.2 liter 4x4 automatic. Everyone seems to have V8 automatic 4x4 trannies or V6 4.6 liter. You get the idea. Do I have any flexibility or do I need to find an exact match?

Get a direct fit. Can you have yours rebuilt or based on your original post, is it available to be rebuilt? As far as the exhaust, he should have unbolted the Y pipe and removed it that way.
