Thanks for the response. However, your response suggests you believe I have a 'scissors' type regulator rather than the one I found when I took the panel off the door. My regulator is a slightly curved piece of metal with two wheels on it (one at each end to guide the cable) and a motor attached. I managed to extract the old motor and mashed up cable but now see that the window is glued to a piece of metal which itself seems to have a pin attaching it to a metal plate that forms part of a sliding attachment to the curved metal assembly. The only solution I can see is to drill out the pin to remove the metal assembly from the window and the re-attach the new regulator via a small bolt and locking nut through the hole where the pin used to reside. Is this a viable repair solution? Any 'gotcha's' with this approach?
