First of all, if it's a trans issue, wheather the light is on or not, the code is stored in memory for 50 drive cycles if the code does not occur again. It sounds like he was just lazy. But, there are probably two problems. The first being the howling noise. The rear differential bearings, ring and pinion need to be inspected. A lot of the late model explorers had concerns with both the rear differential as well as the wheel bearings. This is probably not related to the O/D light unless it has th do with excessive metal on the speed sensor in the rear differential. Have the code checked and post back. We'll talk about the trans concern after we have more info.
