The vehicle is 8 years old and only has 53800 miles on it. Does it make sense to get an extension of the warranty?

You have to be very careful with those policies. They are only as good as the company behind it and you have to read all the fine print carefully. Some of them are very tricky in the way they write them. Some of them make it very difficult;t to collect on anything and eliminate many things that should be covered. You also want to look at the costs and see if it's worth it. I don't expect you to have serious engine or transmission problems but an A/C repair can easily cost $1,000. Brakes and other normal wear items are not usually covered.
