Car shakes

Car shakes while accellerating at all speeds. The faster I go, the worse it gets. I took to shop and they said bad tires, so I replaced them. Car still shakes. I would imagine they checked out the front end as well as the tires. What else could it be that they may have misse? They did recommend an alignment.

MY STEP-DAUGHTERS '96 EXPLODER HAS HAD SEVERE BALL JOINT ISSUES---LIKE ONE DAY AFTER FLYING TO NY, AND PURCHASING IT FROM HER BROTHER

YOU MIGHT ALSO HAVE YOUR DRIVESHAFT UNIVERSAL JOINTS INSPECTED ALSO

"IMAGINE" IS AN ASSUMPTION KINDA WORD----YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY "ASSUME" STANDS FOR? LOL

YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WAS CHECKED (IF YOU HAVE NO CLUE) GET IT IN WRITING!

I DON'T TRY TO RECOMMEND BIG SHOPS OR THE STEALERSHIP.I PROMOTE DIY WHEN IT IS FEASIBLE.

I DO NOT KNOW WHERE YOUR ARE TAKING IT FOR REPAIRS, BUT I DO PROMOTE SMALLER "COMPETENT" PLACES. NOT "LITTLE FREDDIE" THAT USED TO RIDE HIS GO CART DOWN THE STREET YEARS AGO.

PLEASE, YOUR OPINIONS MAY NOT MATCH MINE.I INVESTIGATE ANYWHERE THAT'S GONNA WORK ON ANYTHING OF MINE, ESPECIALLY IF MY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT.I WANT MY STUFF TO BE TREATED LIKE "HE" CARES AS IF IT WERE HIS. SOMETIMES THE CHEAP GUY ISN'T THE ANSWER. AND JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE THE MOST EXPENSIVE SHOP DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE BETTER EITHER!

YES, TRYING TO SCARE YOU--TOO LATE WHEN YOU DIDN'T MAKE IT!

MY STEP-DAUGHTER'S FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL SORTA DID THE "SPLITS" AT ABOUT 60 MPH (THE BOTTOM FLOPPED OUTWARD) AND THE WHEEL WAS NOT FAR FROM LAYING "SUNNY-SIDE UP" ON THE ROAD, STILL ATTACHED TO THE TRUCK

SHE SAYS WAS A MIRACLE, SHE DID NOT GET CREAMED AS SHE DID A FEW 360s DOWN THE INTERSTATE

I LEFT SC WITH A TRAILER AND MANY HOURS LATER I HAD TO SCRAPE THE RIG UP ON TO THE TRAILER IN VA.

SHE ALSO ASSUMED "BROTHER" KEPT HIS RIG IN GOOD WORKING ORDER. WHICH I DID WARN HER ABOUT (HE PUTS MORE EFFORT INTO VIDEO GAMES), AS I CONSTANTLY "WHAT-IF" THE WHOLE FAMILY!

FROM MY WRITING, YOU CAN PROBABLY SEE THAT "NELS-STODOMUS" (ME) IS NOT A POPULAR FELLER AT HOME.I WAS A HERO ON RECOVERY DAY, ESPECIALLY WHEN I JUST GAVE CERTAIN PEOPLE "THE LOOK", BUT SAID NOTHING!

LET'S GET A BETTER EXAMINATION THIS GO 'ROUND

Okay, just got the front end looked at again at a different shop and to emphasize the ball and u-joints. They say they cannot find anything wrong with the front end. We have alot of snow so they say they can't do a road test. I told them to do a wheel balance and alignment to see if that helps. What else could it be?

Wheel balance. Alignment. U-joints. Slide under the truck and shake the driveshaft. There should be no play.

Okay, tires, wheel balance, alignment, the whole 9 yards. Still shakes. Today I noticed it is shaking when I decellerate from 50 mph. I see your pic, but I can't figure out where this is as far as under the car. That's usually a problem for me.I see a diagram, but can't find it either under the car or the hood.

Middle rear. The differential. Look at the picture. The thing with the silver color is the differential cover. On the front side of what it covers.

ALL RIGHTY THEN

THE PICS WERE OF MY '46 WILLYS JEEP'S SUPER AWESOME 66 YEAR OLD DRIVE-SHAFT!

"WILLY" WILL NEVER DIE!

I DON'T KNOW YOUR VEHICLE REAL WELL, SO I GOT ON AUTOZONE ONLINE AND RESEARCHED "UNIVERSAL JOINTS" FOR A 1991 EXPLORER--1ST 4X4 (AS I DO NOT BELIEVE IN 2WD FOR ANYONE!), I CHECKED "ALL WHEEL DRIVE" AND LASTLY 2WD.....ALL USE U-JOINTS!!!!!

IF YOU HAVE 4X4, YOU WILL HAVE A FRONT AND A REAR DRIVE-SHAFT....AND FOUR (4) UNIVERSAL JOINTS. AWD-WILL HAVE THE SAME!

ON A 2WD MODEL, THERE WILL ONLY BE A REAR DRIVE-SHAFT AND TWO(2) U-JOINTS

SEE I BEEN BUSY...BEFORE I TOLD YOU WRONG!

I FOUND OLE "NATHAN" FOR YOU---HE HAS REALLY COLD EARS...I AM OBSERVANT, HE DID NOT INTRODUCE HIMSELF, I READ HIS NAME TAG!

NATHAN IS GONNA SHOW YOU SOME STUFF...MOST UNFORTUNATELY HE CANNOT RESPOND TO YOU.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWYNfVdAx70

IF YOU CHANGE MY SEARCH WORDING, YOU MAY FIND MORE ABOUT THIS, AND MAYBE OTHER STUFF ABOUT YOUR RIG....I FOUND THIS BY USING "FORD EXPLORER UNIVERSAL JOINTS"

IF YOU HAVE A FOUR WHEEL DRIVE MODEL---COULD IT BE THAT YOU ARE LOCKED IN UNINTENTIONALLY???.....VIBRATIONS??? 4 WHEEL IS NOT FOR ASPHALT USE

REGARDLESS, YOU SHOULD BE CHECKING THIS STUFF PERIODICALLY...STUFF DOES WEAR OUT......YOU'RE IN CHARGE!....NOT JIFFY DUDE, DOWN AT THE SUPER-DOOPER OIL CHANGE PLACE

IF YOU HAVE AN "ALL WHEEL DRIVE" YOU MUST CHECK BOTH DRIVE-SHAFTS, 'CAUSE BOTH TURN ALL OF THE TIME

NOT TRYING TO BE SMART HERE...I TRY TO MAKE MY ANSWERS INTERESTING AND "REMEMBERABLE"!

I SORTA SENSE---YOU DRIVE, AND MAYBE RELY ON OTHERS TO TELL YOU WHAT NEEDS DOIN'.....NOT A GOOD APPROACH!....THIS MACHINE CAN BE YOUR BEST BUDDY (LIKE MY 2 JEEPS) OR IT CAN "TURN ON YOU" LIKE A NEGLECTED DOG....IF IT'S NEGLECTED!

SO FAR I HAVE GIVEN YOU A REALLY GOOD RESOURCE TO USE FOR ANYTHING FROM TRIMMING YOUR TOENAILS--WORKING ON YOUR CAR! (YOU TUBE)

HERE'S ANOTHER REALLY GOOD ONE---I FOUND, AND STILL USE, BEFORE YOU TUBE WAS EVEN THOUGHT OF! THIS WILL TELL YOU MIGHT-NEAR ANYTHING YOU NEED TO DO TO YOUR VEHICLE. TAKE A LOOK AT THIS LINK

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/2007-ford-taurus-tune-up

WAITIN' ON YOU.....TELL US YOU ARE GOOD TO GO...OR WE WILL ATTEMPT TO CONTINUE!

CJ, I used to be one of those "Jiffy Dudes" and I used to give my customers a complete rundown of everything I found that needed attention, both that we could do and what we couldn't do. Sometimes I gave them my card so I could get the work, other times I referred them somewhere. Don't lump people, it'll bite ya.

SORTA LIKE THERE'S TWO ENDS OF THE STICK ('SPECIALLY IN MY TRADE...PLUMBING) SOME PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THAT, TILL THE TAKE A GANDER AT THEIR HAND......WE CALL THAT, "TOO LATE NOW!"

I'M NOT DOWNGRADING COMPETENT PEOPLE, JUST TRYING TO SHOW PEOPLE HOW TO FIND THEM..........PROCESS OF ELIMINATION!

MUSTA NOTA READ ABOUT "IMPACT MAN IN MY LINK"!

HYPOTHETICAL. YOU ARE GOING FROM SHOP TO SHOP WITH NICHOLAS CAGE, ON "LEADS" THAT ONE OF THEM HAS THE THE ORIGINAL CHROME TRIM THAT YOU ARE MISSING ON THE BACK GLASS OF YOUR '63 NOVA PROJECT CAR. THE OLD NOVA IS GONNA NEED A REAR MAIN SEAL ALSO, AND YOU ARE SHOPPING FOR A SHOP

AT SHOP "1", NICK IS INQUIRING ABOUT THE TRIM AND YOU'VE BEEN STANDING THERE WATCHIN' A FELLER PICK UP THE NEW OIL PUMP OFF OF THE FLOOR AND KINDA SHAKE THE OIL DRY OFF OF IT, THEN FUMBLING AROUND IN AN ATTEMPT TO INSTALL IT.

THEN DAYS LATER OVER AT SHOP "2", AGAIN, SMOOTH TALKIN' NICK IS AT IT AGAIN, AS YOU WATCH A MAN STANDING THERE, COMPARING AN OLD PART TO THE NEW, DECIDED IT WAS WRONG, BEFORE HE INSTALLED IT. THEN WHEN HE GOT THE RIGHT ONE, FRESH OUT OF THE BOX, HE METICULOUSLY, WIPED IT, AND THE MATING SURFACE SO CLEAN IT WOULD PASS NASA STANDARDS.

WHICH SHOP DO YOU WANT TO WORK ON YOUR RIG?

MUST YOU ASK "NICK"?

WHAT IF NICK SAYS SHOP "1" IS GONNA DO IT $25 LESS THAN SHOP "2"?

WOW! SAVE $25!---OR SPEND $25 MORE FOR THE REAR MAIN SEAL?

THREE MONTHS LATER YOU ARE ON A ROAD TRIP IN THE NOVA WITH NICK. ARE YOU HAVING A GOOD TIME. DO YOU WONDER IF YOUR REAR MAIN BEARING CAP WAS TIGHTENED WITH A TORQUE WRENCH OR BY "FEEL" WITH A RATCHET?

I'M NOT SAYING A BIG SHOP HAS DUMB PEOPLE---ARE YOU SAYING THE MAN AT THE AUTO SALVAGE YARD SHOP/ THE FELLER WHO DOES SIDE WORK AT THE AUTO PARTS STORE IS LESS CAPABLE? I'M JUST SAYING THERE ARE LESSER EXPENSIVE PLACES THAN THE STEALERSHIP AND A BIG SHOP. YOU JUST GOTTA SORTA KNOW HOW TO RECON FOR ONE THAT IS COMPETENT AND CHEAPER. IDIOTS CAN BE FOUND IN ANY SHOP.

AND DUMB PEOPLE MIGHT LET IDIOTS WORK ON THERE STUFF!

CASE IN POINT:

NEW HOUSE PIPED UP BY "CARPENTERS" (A LOOSELY USED TERM)

SUPER PLUMBER (ME) CALLED IN 3 MONTHS LATER---AWFUL SMELLS

FAMILY OF 3 DADDY, MAMA, 6 MONTH OLD CRUMB SNATCHER

MAMA AND KID HOME. MAMA'S FATHER, CONTRACTED THE HOUSE BUILT. CHEAP

SUPER PLUMBER FINDS THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO TRAPS ANYWHERE IN THE DWELLING. NOT AT TUBS, LAVS, KIT SINK, WASHING MACHINE. THERE ARE NO VENTS OUT OF THE ROOF (TRAPS MUST BE VENTED CORRECTLY, OR THEY DO NOT WORK. IF THEY ARE EVEN THERE!)

THE "TRAP" IS NOT DESIGNED TO CATCH YOU LITTLE DIAMOND EARRING, THEY ARE DESIGNED TO HOLD WATER, AT AT ALL TIMES (REASON FOR PROPER VENTS, OTHERWISE "SIPHONING" WOULD S. UCK 'EM DRY)

THE "TRAP" HOLDS WATER, THUS KEEPING HARMFUL SEWER GASES AND AIRBORNE DISEASE BEARING MOLECULES. METHANE. ETC!

TOLD GAL THE HOUSE WOULD NEED TO BE PLUMBED. NOT RE-PLUMBED. IT NEVER HAD BEEN THAT WAY TO BEGIN WITH. PIPES WERE GLUED TOGETHER, EVEN THAT WAS BOTCHED UP!

I TOLD HERE IT WAS A HEATH HAZARD, COULD MAKE YOU SICK. OR EVEN DIE! WALLS NEED TO COME OUT, AND SOME CEILINGS. SHE ASKED IF IT WERE DANGEROUS, HOW LONG COULD SHE STAY THERE WITH THE CRUMB SNATCHER AND NOT GET SICK?

AS BAD AS IT SMELLED IN THERE---I TOLD HER I SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT THE 1-2 HOURS I HAD BEEN IN THERE, INVESTIGATING. (MUCH LESS 3 MONTHS OF THINKING THIS WAS NORMAL)

SHE CALLED HER DAD, DAD TOLD HER TO GO TO HIS HOUSE HE WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT. SO I WENT BACK TO THE SHOP AND WORKED UP AN ESTIMATE TO FIX THE MESS.

I SEEN HER DAD 2 MONTHS LATER, I ASKED IF HE HAD GOTTEN IT FIXED, IF NOT, I STILL HAD THE ESTIMATE, THAT HE NEVER CALLED ABOUT.

GET THIS!

HE SAID HE HAD "THEM" COME BACK AND FIX IT RIGHT!

SO I RECKON, YOU CAN GET INCOMPETENT IGNORANT FELLERS TO EITHER GIVE YOU A BOTCHED UP JOB----OR A "TO CODE" FIXED RIGHT JOB, WHICHEVER YOU PREFER!

SAME GOES FOR OTHER TRADES."THIS MAN SCREWED MY CAR UP SO BAD.I'M GONNA LET HIM FIX IT!"

I WRITE THIS STUFF IN HOPES THAT SOMEONE MAY BENEFIT, NOT TO PIZZ SOMEONE OFF, ETC. NOT TO IMPROVE MY TYPING SKILLS (HUNT AND PECKING SKILLS)!

HOLY S?>"! I Followed the instructions and the diagram. Talk about play? It's like a damn playground down there. Thank you all for your help now just 1 more question, do I need to replace the whole driveshaft or just u-joint? Is it something I can do on my own? Doesn't look like it would be too hard for me, but that doesn't mean a novice should try to do it!

2 OR 3 BUDDIES, SOME BASIC, TOOLS AND SOME ATTENTION TO DETAIL----YES YOU CAN SAVE YOURSELF $200 OR MORE!!!!

I DON'T ANSWER THE MOST HERE, REALLY WAS NOT MY INITIAL INTENTIONS. I STARTED ANSWERING HERE TO AID THE JEEP CJ GUYS.....SORTA MY CRUSADE

UPON REALIZING THEY ARE BUILT SO WELL, AND EZ TO MAINTAIN, THEY COME HERE...FEW AND FAR BETWEEN....I'M REALLY UP TO SPEED ON THEM, AND IF YOU GO TO THE CJ 5 AND CJ 7 FORUMS....YOU WILL SEE HOW MUCH "HAND HOLDING" I DO TO AID THEM

WHILE WAITING LONG PERIODS OF TIME TO AID A CJ, I STARTED TRYING TO AID THOSE OTHER "RIGS" IN WHICH I DO HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE ABOUT, AT LEAST SYSTEMS ON THEM.

ALL OF THIS STUFF MAY SOUND COMPLICATED---IT REALLY AIN'T---INSTALLING CONTACTS INTO MY PHONE IS MUCH HARDER THAN INSTALLING "U"-JOINTS

YOU MIGHT FIND MORE "INSTALL VIDEOS" ON YOU TUBE...I'LL SUM IT UP BEST I CAN

MARK YOKES AND SHAFT ON BOTH ENDS W/ CHALK OR MARKER, SO IT CAN BE INSTALLED BACK AS IT WAS

REMOVE RETAINER CLIPS FROM THE U-JOINTS

USING SMALL AND LARGE SOCKETS (PUSHERS AND RECEIVERS) PUSH OUT THE OLD JOINTS----RE-INSTALL THE NEW ONES THE SAME WAY

FILL THE REMOVED BEARING CAPS W/ GREASE, TO KEEP THE NEEDLE BEARINGS FROM FALLING OVER, DURING INSTALLATION

INSTALL RETAINER CLIPS

RE-INSTALL DRIVE-SHAFT

*****REMEMBER YOU COULD HAVE UP TO FOUR OF THESE!

STICK YOU WITH A FORK.....YOU ARE DONE!!!

SO, SORTA LOOK AT YOUR NEW CHILTON'S MANUAL, WATCH A FEW VIDEOS, ACQUIRE SIMPLE TOOLS, HAVE YOUR MECHANICAL PAL COME OVER....ARE YOU READY TO DIY?

IN THIS LINK---THE TOP ONE HAS A LIFETIME WARRANTY

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/2001-Ford-Explorer-2WD/U-Joint/_/N-jessiZ6o242?filterByKeyWord=UNIVERSAL+JOINTS&fromString=search

IN THIS LINK---"MY U-JOINTS" ALSO ARE INCLUDED, ALL FOUR ON MY JEEP. I HAVE REPLACE SOME SEVERAL TIMES...FREE W/ LIFETIME WARRANTY! SEE MY THIRD ANSWER IN THIS LINK!

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/1993-jeep-grand-cherokee-no-spark-on-two-wires

MY PICS ARE OF A '88 F-100 2WD PICK-UP U-JOINTS, I REPLACED FOR A FRIEND

I REALLY DO NOT THINK YOU CAN SAY AN AIRBORNE RANGER HAS NOT PUT OUT 110% OF EFFORT THUS FAR! WILLING TO GO ON, UNTIL THE MISSION IS COMPLETE!

ARE YOU READY TO..........JUMP???!!!

You are right, I do rely on other people to tell me what is wrong with my cars. I refer to this site. You guys have saved me $100s. Literally Especially letting me know the scams to watch for. You are less likely to get ripped off when you TELL the mechanic what is wrong with your vehicle.

NOT NECESSARILY SCAMS, I JUST TRY TO SPREAD THE WORD THAT THERE ARE OTHER SMART AND CAPABLE PEOPLE WHO CAN HELP YOU LESS EXPENSIVELY. I TRY TO PROMOTE DIY ON REPAIRS. EVEN I COULD NOT TAKE ON MY WIFE'S FORD ESCAPE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, I HAD TO "SUB" IT OUT. BE ASSURED, OVER THE YEARS, I HAVE BEEN GATHERING INFO, AS TO WHO IS THE BEST "TRANNY MAN" AROUND HERE. HE IS THE FELLER THAT THE STEALERSHIPS BRING THEIR PROBLEM CHILDREN TO. LUCKILY THE "TRANNY MAN" AND I ARE SORTA CASUAL FRIENDS (NOT BEST BUDDIES) HE SAVED ME $800 LAST YEAR, WHEN WIFEY'S TRANNY BROKE!
