1998 explorer getting a low grind at start in drive and when you speed up it turns into loud whine/roar. Doesn't do it turning to left, quiet as the day I bought it. CV joints or worse?

IT sounds like a wheel bearing. If it stops when you turn left, you are taking the weight off the left side; thus the sound goes away. See if you can figure if it is in the front or rear. And let me know.
