1996 Ford Explorer 2WD Transmission in 4WD truck

1996 Ford Explorer Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My 16 year old son had a 1998 Ford Explorer(2wd sport) and had an accident that bent the frame. Someone gave him a 1996 4x4 explorer that needed a motor. Since the motor in the 2wd was in good shape, my Dad put it in the 4x4. It was fine for awhile and then the transmission went out. So, Dad put the trans from the 2wd in, however, it will not shift properly. Are there any tips that you can suggest or is it a hopeless case?

What did he use for a speed signal?With out a speed signal transmission cant shift right.

I think this may be too far over my head.I'm not even sure what you mean by speed signal. I asked Dad and he is not clear on what that is either. Thanks so much for your help!
