My Explorer was running and shifting normaly, I had decided to do maintaince and change transmission fluid and filter. When maintaince was completed I drove my vehicle to get a airbag light looked at by an technician. On the way my transmission totaly went out. It didnt matter where I put the selector, it was like it was in nuetral. I towed the car home. I started it up and it shifted to get the car moved but when it ran for 5 minutes it would not shift again. I let it set over the winter and started it now and it will not do anything. Just woondering if it may be something I did when servicing that could have caused the problem. Or it is just a bad timing and the transmission just went bad at that time.

I have a couple questions. First, are you sure the trans fluid full? Before you changed it, was it extreamly dirty, (brown and smelled burnt)? Are you sure you properly attached the trans filter when you replaced it?

Let me know.

Joe

Yes, the tranny fluid was full, and it was a little dirty but did not smell burnt. I changed it because it had about 50K on it since last change. I also just pulled the pan and checked filter again and it seemed to be installed correctly. Unless there is a malfunction with the filter.

I would have to say that it was bad timing. Something tells me there is a problem with the trans control module (TCM). That is what I would recommend having checked first.
