2003 Ford Expedition Steering suddenly became very stiff an

I have been by an armchair mechanic that it must be my rack and pinion and that it's quite expensive to repair. I thought it might be the power steering pump. Can anyone give me any insight as to what their thoughts are and how much is reasonable for a repair?

Ok what has been checked so far? It could be the rack unit, the pump or the power steering pressure sensor if it has electronic suspension.
