We have a 2000 Expedition we bought it new and all the sudden it makes a lurch and thud that can be heard and felt at low speeds it is always in the parking lot or drive way when creeping at low speeds, also in reverse it is intermitant and usual when the vehicle is heated up. I checked the U-joints 3 times and they don't appear to have slack the tail shaft has about an 1/8 inch side to side movement. I feel like it comes from the rear and is in the drive train you can hear the bump and then it feels like you ran over a rock or something. I changed the fluid and filter on the trans and checked the level but it still does it.

Does your rear end have posi traction? Have you changed oil in the transfer case?

The side to side movement in tail shaft is normal. The only thing I can think of is, sticking clutch discs in rear differential, (quite common) id double check rear end. Just jack rear end off ground and spin 1 wheel, if the other one spins in the same direction its posi. If it spins in opposite direction its regular. If its posi the clutches stick causing binding when turning. All you have to do is change fluid and add posi slip additive.

I went out and checked it out it is an single track the tires turned in opposite directions when I spinned one around I remembered also when this thud is felt I am not giving it throttle it is just in drive moving at idle speed as soon as throttle is applied it stops doing it.
