What type of transmission fluid does a 2001 Ford Escort with 92,000 miles, 4 cylinder 2.0L engine, automatic transmission require?
I was told mercon, but mercon what? Mercon 3, 4 v, f?
I bought the car in 2002 when it was at 32,000 miles from a car rental company (Hertz) and since then I have never had the transmission serviced.
It is doing fine that I can tell but in my maintenance manual it has this service checked for the 90,000 mile mark.
This is my first time and I am going to do it myself because the prices that I was quoted are ridiculous especially since it only needs the pan, filter, and fluid change.
I already have the tools.
I also know a drop off site for recycling my fluid.

Was the chk engine lite on the last time when u took it back to the mechanic after iAC was replaced. If so what were the codes. Chk engine llite is just a warning signal that ur engine management sys has a problem. It could be same problem or other problems. Msg me when u post answers to my questions.

Thanks for the feedback. The mechanic just said that it was a misc. Code but the car was running fine. He reset the codes and said if it happens again let him know. Yesterday the light went on and the engine began to run eratically again. I have to bring it back in on Tues. I will see what the code is and let you know.

Double check the coolant level and have the air purged out of the cooling system.

How do I check the transmission fluid in my Escort? I understand that being a manual transmission means that the fluid should always be ok. I am have gear shifting problems.I have to force the car in gear. It feels like driving a car with out power steering. HELP.

Haven't had a manual trans since 87, but usually there is a hex-head plug that must be removed, the fluid should be at the bottom of the plug opening after you remove it, may leak a little depending on plane of vehicle. Get yourself a repair manual, Chilton or whatever to help you. Unless the trans is leaking the fluid should remain constant provided it was correct to begin, how is the clutch operating? Releasing as normal or has the point changed?Any shuddering upon release?

Transmission Fluid Fill
1.Disconnect the electrical connector from the Vehicle Speed Sensor.
2.Disconnect the speedometer cable from the VSS.
3.Remove the VSS bolt and gently pry out the VSS.
4.Place a funnel into the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounting hole.
5.Add the specified transmission fluid until the "full" level on the VSS is reached.
6.Position the VSS. Install the VSS bolt. Tighten the VSS bolt to 8-12 N-m (69-104 lb-in).
7.Connect the speedometer cable to the VSS.
8.Connect the VSS electrical connector.
