maybe a lower radiator hose sucking shut under heavy load like pulling a hill. AC always puts more load on engine have you washed the coolng fins out in front of condensor and reverse washed back through the radiator side. could be a slite leaking headgasket problem puting compression back in the cooling system (NOS) 8)

Suggested Repair

After confirming the thermostat, check for a lower radiator hose collapsing under load, restricted radiator or condenser fins, poor coolant flow, and a possible slight head gasket leak pressurizing the cooling system.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a Ford Escort diesel reports overheating with the air conditioning on and when climbing hills, while highway driving is otherwise fine. The radiator, coolant, fans, and water pump were already checked. An expert suggested replacing the thermostat, and the owner said it was changed and works. Further advice pointed to a collapsing lower hose under load, restricted cooling fins, poor flow, or a slight head gasket leak.
