94 Escort will not shift by itself (stays in Drive)

I have a 1994 Ford Escort with an automatic transmission. I have just bought the car and was told that the transmission was just recently changed, when I take off from a light, it starts off in the "D" rather than low gear, basicly it just stays there. If I manually put it in low gear to start, it will then start in low, then I can manually shift up into Drive, however, it will not go into overdrive at all. Any Thoughts?

My 95 Escort did essentially the same thing. Sometimes it would stay in first, other times it would work, but shift really hard, and other times it wouldn't go into any gear.

I finally had the trans rebuilt. It turns out that it was just "tired" as the shop put it. It works fine now.
