I can tell you how to bypass it to shift gears until you have the budget to bring it to the mechanic.
Bypassing system:
On the right side of the gear shifter, there is a half inch round cover. ( The left side of the shifter is P, the right side is a half inch round cover.) Pop it out. Now, while pushing in the button on the gear shifter, AT THE SAME TIME, insert a 6 inch philipps screwdriver in the hole where you pop out the half inch cover. Push the screwdriver down lightly (no need to rotate) until it shifts. Philipps screwdriver should have a metal that is thin in diameter so it will fit in the hole. Thats it.
Oh, I have read in the repair manual for possible causes.
1. Check for the following fuses.
Stop (15A). Room (10A). And Meter (10A)
2. Shift lock actuator. (That is the mechanism that you are pushing down with the screwdriver.)
3. Brake pedal position switch (Located above the brake pedal)
4. Park range switch switch located on the transmission (outside not inside)
5. Shift cable adjustment
6. Gearshift lever
