I have a 2000 ford escort: 60,000 Mi, and today the battery icon light was on, the engine was overhiating and the power steering wasn't working right. The fluids are OK except the engine coolant was a low with a small leak on our garage floor. I replaced the battery last summer but for last couple months when I have the lights and windshield wipers on, the engine idles rough at stoplights. Could this be the battery cables need replacing or an electrical problem?

It could be several things, but thats where I would start, check all connections and clean corrosion, then have your alternator tested.

First thing to check is the serpentine belt, is it still there? This belt drives the alt, and power steering!
