Starter is under the intake manifold attached to the transmission, it is hard to see it when looking on top of the engine, but you can see it when you are underneath the car.
Suggestions: Before you change the starter, if you jump start your car and it starts the engine, maybe it is just your battery terminal. Cleaning the battery terminal might help. Plus, Escort battery terminals, even if you tighten the bolt, the terminal is still a little loose. Causing this spark/smoke. Replace it with a new one, $6 at the auto supply for Escort. The negative cable, if defective, is not that expensive either. If it still does not start, maybe it is the starter.
