My Ford Escort has an ongoing intermitent problem. Beginning 2 years ago, when the engine is running and the car is at a light or sitting in the driveway, the idle will begin to jump from 8000rpm up to 12 to 15000 and then down past 8000 to 3 or 4 and then back up. When it falls again it sputters and eventually the moter quits. I have had it to mechanic more than once and they can't find the problem. Whether I take a short trip or a long one it will happen. Up until last year all I had to do was turn on the ignition. Since then I have to turn the engine off and run through the starting sequence. Other than this problem the car runs great. I have had it for 14 years and have had no major problems.
Please advise,

Hi, John. The symptoms sound like a bad throttle position sensor or idle air control valve. Has the check engine light ever come on?

John,
Just for the heck of it, take it to a nationally recognized parts store and ask them to scan the computer. Most do it for free, and there may be a trouble code in the computer history. Also, check for vacuum leaks under the hood.

Let me know what you find.
