Electrical problem
1994 Ford Escort Manual van miles

Hi,
i have a 1994 ford escort van 1.8 diesel. The problem is that it wont charge the battery. I have replaced the battery and the alternator but still no luck. I have checked all the fuses and they seem ok. I have traced all the wires for brakes/corrosion but they all seem ok too. All the earthing point are ok. When I run a meter across the battery when its running the battery slowly dies. When I put a meter across the altornator is reads 0.01v. I suspect its a wireing problem but I dont know where else to look. Also it will start with a tow rope of if I leave it connected to my other car for about half hour.

If you have an output of 0.01V from alternator the alternator is not working? Using a voltmeter. Put red lead from voltmeter to large B+ terminal on alternator and put black voltmeter lead to battery ground or any ground point with the engine running. If your not getting 13+ volts the alternator is not working?

Hi,
i changed the alternator again today and I am now getting 14v to the battery. However the battery is charging but the battery light wont go out. Its not fully lit but about half lit. Any ideas? I have cleaned the bushes. I have been told it could be the diod but it wouldnt be charging if that was broken? Right?

Sounds like you may have a loose wire/fuse/bulb. Check the wires on alternator. Check the fuse. Check the bulb and holder. More likely on alterantor if you have just replaced it and the light was off before it went defective?

Alternator Light Stays Off With Ignition Switch ON
Blown fuse. See WIRING DIAGRAMS
Defective alternator. See Testing in ALTERNATOR article
Defective indicator light bulb or socket. See Indicator Warning Lights in STANDARD INSTRUMENTS in the ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT section
