Engine Mechanical problem
1992 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

When I turn the key the lights work and everything but the car doesn't turn over, nothing at all. I have tried jump starting it, cleaning the battery cables and connections, checking all fuses, replacing the battery, and hitting the starter with a hammer. Nothing works. My guess is it's the starter wire or the starter. Only problem I have no clue how to check if the wire is connected right, nor do I have any clue were the starter is.

Have you checked the starter relay?

I had the same problem (1.9L version, right?). Check the relay by having someone turn the key while you listen for a clicking. If you hear the relays clicking, the wire from the relay isn't engaging the starter solenoid. Mine had somehow come off!

The starter is located on the side of the engine closest to the firewall, so it takes some leaning and reaching to see the wires.
