2001 Ford Escape uncontrolled acceleration

V 6 3 litre 2001 Ford Escape 4x4 with 104000 Klm on it. Occasionally had acceleration surges but intermittently - Now will not IDLE - last night it just accelerated up to 80 klm an hour without touching the gas - afraid to drive it as I had to shut it off in gear last night - could barely control it when brakes on - Had the PCM adjusted in a recall and seems like shifting and ongoing problems since Has anyone ever heard of this - what could the problem be?

Hi there, I have a 2003 escape.
When I bought it, there were about 3 recalls on this model and year. One of them was related to what you are describing. I wish I could remember the details of which part and all, but I can not. However, if you can look up recalls on this model, I think you will find it. There were several cases where vehicles accelerated on their own, causing accidents, so get it checked out. And if itr is covered by a recall, you are not responsible for the cost of the repair.

1- Campaign # 00V210001 recall

There are 2 TSB's (tech service bulletins) about engine quit/idle dips. But above is all I found on your issue
