I need to install a new ignition switch and I would like to know how to remove the steering wheel. I has airbag in the steering wheel assembly. I di a switch in a 1989 van of the same type. But that one did not have an airbag in it. So I think I can handle that once the wheel is removed. But if there is a special application due to the airbag assembly, perhaps that info should be giving as well. Does this van use the same type of switch as the 1989 model? If so I already have the switch.

I have removed the steering wheel off my 98 van with an airbag and it wasn't anything tricky. There are capacitors to store electricity for the airbag system. So to disable the airbag you should only have to disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected for over half and hour to and hour. I elected to live on the wild side and just remove the airbag (and simple 4 bolts from the back side of the wheel) and just keep your head out of the way! I didn't have any problems. I assume you have the pullers to take the wheel itself off? The only thing you have to be careful of is the "clock spring" which is ribben wire that controls all the wheel electronics. It is designed to have a certain number of revolutions in either direction. I got it wound too tight and only could turn the wheel two turns to the right when I got finished so I had to remove the airbag and steering wheel a second time (again with no snags) and reposition the clock spring. As to weather the key switch is the same from and 89 to a 92 I wouldn't know. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply, I got the pullers and all for the wheel The air bag bolts are rusty and Im asking for a mechanically challenged friend, (my bro back home) just what size are these bolts on the back of the wheel you need to remove the air bag assembly. I, m recovering from a broken leg or I would go do it for him he said he could not get a socket to fit on the bolts. I know this is STUPID question but I told him I would ask for him. Thanks LOTS for the reply

I REALLY hate to ask this but I could not say no to my bro. I hope you can understand this

The bolts on my airbag are a 8MM ( a very close relative to the 5/16.) however this is from my '98 and I know they changed the steering wheel style between then and '92. I wish I knew exactly then set up on the 92, but mine only has two 8 mm head bolts from the back of the wheel. there may be some little plastic caps that cover the bolt holes, and I remember having some trouble getting a socket on mine as well. a small mirror might be useful because the bolts are at a very strange angle compared to the airbag (Thank you again ford engineering dept!!!) the picture shows that you definitely have to search for the bolt head at more like a 45 degree angle than straight at the wheel. getting to see what you were looking at with a mirror may be the very best option. hope that can help some.

Thanks for the super quick reply to that one. I think the caps are his problem. And the angle thing was a good inclusion. I did the question for the that was driving his van and it quit like it was out of gas on the highway. Mine did that right in front of a police station. It was a good one! And it stumped a dealer as well. Check out my reply. Thanks again too!
