I recently began having issues with my Crown Vic P71 windshield wipers. When turned off from positions other than the intermittent setting, they would return to a position straight up rather than parked at the bottom of the windshield. In the last couple days, they now go straight up in ALL positions and the intermittent function no longer works. Is this an issue with wiper motors or the multi-function switch assembly that operates them?

TEST G: WIPERS WILL NOT PARK PROPERLY

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect wiper motor harness connector C151. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 4 (Black wire) at wiper motor harness connector C151. See Fig. 4. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is grater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire between wiper motor and ground G203 (located behind driver's kick panel, near door frame).
Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at terminal No. 1 (Dark Green wire) at wiper motor harness connector C151. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Dark Green wire between fuse No. 2 (30-amp) in junction block and wiper motor.
Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Wiper Control Module (WCM) harness connector C294. Measure resistance in Red wire between terminal No. 13 at WCM harness connector C294 and terminal No. 3 at wiper motor harness connector C151. See Fig. 2 and Fig. 4. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Red wire between wiper control module and wiper motor.
Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 13 (Red wire) at WCM harness connector C294. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohs or less, repair short to ground in Red wire between wiper control module and wiper motor.
Measure resistance in Black/Pink wire between terminal No. 6 at WCM harness connector C294 and terminal No. 2 at wiper motor harness connector C151. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Pink wire.
Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 6 (Black/Pink wire) at WCM harness connector C294. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, replace WCM. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Black/Pink wire between wiper control module and wiper motor.

TEST F: INTERMITTENT SPEED DOES NOT OPERATE PROPERLY
Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Wiper Control Module (WCM) harness connector C294. Turn wiper switch to any interval setting. Measure resistance between terminals No. 1 (Orange wire) and No. 7 (Brown/White wire) at WCM harness connector C294. See Fig. 2. Resistance should be 10.5-12.0 k/ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace multifunction switch.
While rotating interval portion of wiper switch, measure resistance between WCM harness connector terminals No. 7 (Brown/White wire) and No. 9 Dark Blue/White wire). Resistance should change smoothly from 3.3-10.3 k/ohms. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step. If resistance is as specified, replace WCM.
Disconnect multifunction switch harness connector C269. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 9 (Dark Blue/White wire) at WCM harness connector C294. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Dark Blue/White wire between wiper control module and multifunction switch.
Measure resistance in Dark Blue/White wire between terminal No. 9 at WCM harness connector C294 and terminal No. 6 at multifunction switch harness connector C269. See Fig. 2 and Fig. 3. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace multifunction switch. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Blue/White wire between wiper control module and multifunction switch.

To make the 2 previous answers easier, I have found that over 90% of the time, when your problem occurs, the wiper motor poark circuit has failed. Wiper motor replacement is likely.

When the windshield wipers are shut off when the rain stops, they stop pointing upward every time. Then if I turn them on and off [u:8bbb96b618]very quickly[/u:8bbb96b618], while the wipers are on their way down, they will stop in the middle, about a 2 or 3 o'clock position, and I can manually push them the rest of the way down. Then I don't have to drive around with the wipers in the middle of my line of site. Also When I'm driving at freeway speeds the drivers side windshield wiper lifts off the surface of the window. Is this an expensive repair?
