How does the brake light switch work?
How do you install a new one?

The problem is that I have to press quite firmly on the brake pedal for the brake lights to come on.

The brake light switch has power all the time and when you press on the brake pedal it completes the circuit and the power is sent to the brake bulbs.
Changing the switch is easy, unplug the switch, pull the retaining pin out, remove the white washer, and slide the switch and black spacer off. To install, put the black spacer on, (not all the way)install the switch with the slotted opening over the black spacer and on the pedal dowl, slide the switch and spacer all the way on, install washer and pin and reconnect the connector. Check the connector for broken wires and heat damage.
