Factory starter recently broke so I replaced it with a new one. However after about a month or so I heard a grinding sound when I tried to start the car. So I pulled the starter and the housing had broke. There is no shim between the started and the engine block but there is a sheet of metal that is between the starter and the engine block and it looks like a shim but its part of the car. It seems to me like this sheet of metal may be the problem but I'm not sure. Should I add a shim in order to stop the grinding and the excessive torque on the starter?

The sheet metal you are talking about is to keep the dirt and junk form inside the flywheel. If the starter broke the housing, check to see if the gears on the flywheel are ok. You may need to replace the ring gear on the fly wheel. Or the starter wasn't tightened down enoguh to begin with. You shouldn't need any shim for the starter.
