the blades on my alternator recently started grinding and I just wanted to know why and is it bad?

Yes replace it immediatly. The turbine could overheat and literally explode, beyond just the fact that it could fail normally at anytime and leave you stranded. Has it been hit with debris of any kind? Do you have the correct belt tension? The main shaft may be slightly bent due to abnormal metal fatigue. It is a cheap fix and fairly easy to replace in comparison to electrical component damage or a possible explosion.
