Do the left side turn signals work properly? When you say "the flashers turn on, I assume you mean all turn signals, front and rear, left and right, and the two indicators on the dash. If that's correct, look very closely at the brightness of all of the outside lights.
If you find the same symptom when the left signals are turned on, look for chewed up trailer harness wires that are touching each other. This was more of a minivan thing, but don't overlook it.
If the left signals work properly, nothing is shorted between the two sides. In this instance, I'm betting you'll find the left side bulbs are not as bright as the right side when the right signals are on. The same will be true of the dash indicator. While the signals are on, have a helper press the brake pedal. If the left bulbs get brighter and the right bulbs go out, there is a bad ground for the right side. When the right signals are turned on, current can't go through the bulb because of the bad ground. It searches for a different path and finds it by going through the signal / brake filament, back through the tail light filament in the same bulb, then over to the tail light on the left side, then to ground on the left side to complete the circuit. Proof can be found by removing the left side bulbs. If the right side doesn't work with the left side bulbs removed, follow the right ground wire until you find a break or corrosion.
Although less common, this can be caused by a bad ground on the front too. Same test; remove the left front bulbs to see if the right signals quit. This also works when you have one dim headlight due to a bad ground.
