Hi,
This could be a few things. First, did the check engine light stay on while the engine ran prior to this? If it did, you should start by getting the computer scanned for trouble codes. Here is a video showing how it's done:

Next, the idea that it required starting fluid prior is interesting. It could be related to low fuel pressure, an engine vacuum leak, engine compression, or even an engine coolant temperature sensor.
Here is what I am thinking. First, confirm there is proper fuel pressure. Second, check the spark to the plugs. You should be seeing a hot snapping blue spark. If it is white or orange, it is weak and could be related to an ignition component.
Here are a few links you may find helpful. The first link covers the most common causes of a crank no start condition. The second explains how to test fuel pressure, and the third explains how to check for ignition spark.

Do this and let me know the results. Also, if you could record the engine cranking and upload it for me to hear, it may be helpful. Let me know if you have access to a live data scan tool as well.
Take care,
Joe
