I have read about issues with the 5.4L 3V engine having issues but do not see anything regarding the 4.6L 3V even though they both share components. I have concerns about the Tensioners, Phasers, and Rocker Arms.

What I am worried about is being on a trip and experiencing a catastrophic failure without any warning. Am I being paranoid or is this unlikely to happen?

Also, would you recommend spending the time and money to replace these components?

Hi,

You aren't being paranoid, but I was taught a long time ago if it isn't broken, don't fix it. Also, if there is a failure, it won't happen instantly. You will hear noise and start noticing power loss. Additionally, the check engine light will illuminate, and a code will be set regarding timing/camshaft issues.

The best thing you can do is this. Make sure to change the oil on a regular basis. If, however, you question something that is happening, please feel free to come back at any time. Also, if you notice a rattling noise from the front of the engine, then you may want to consider the timing chain and tensioners.

Take care of yourself and let me know if you have other questions.

Joe
