if it pops back through intake then check for a worn cam or valve not opening. timing on ignition is not set.

This guide will help you install the timing belt

I have just replaced the water pump, timing belt, both idlers and tensioner pulley, and automatic tensioner on a 2001 mazda 626 2.5 litre. It started right up but almost immediately began to whine and the engine stalled out once. The pulleys and belt came in a kit (gates #tck214) The new automatic tensioner I put on is a cloyes #9-5324. It is a cast iron unit instead of aluminum. Is the belt too tight? Should I try using the old tensioner? The new one had more stickout but i checked online and this is the recommended part#.. please help. Thank you

Hi there,

This does sound like the tensioner is to tight, try the old tensioner and see how you go.

Thank you for replying. The old hydraulic tensioner puked oil when I compressed it to pin the plunger for reassembly. My understanding is this means replacement. The cloyes part had a stickout greater than that of the factory piece. Either there is some mid year cutoff or this part is manufactured wrong. I have a dayco replacement on order which is , from observation on the website, identicle to the factory aluminum piece instead of a cast iron replacement-same stickout. The cloyes had a lifetime replacement, the dayco one year. Go figure. Thanks

These things are sent to try us, as you said the old one is due to be replaced and the one that is noisy is over tensioning the belt, the replacement one i hope will solve all your problems,

Good luck,

Well I've taken the thing apart and replaced the tensioner with the correct one. The car starts and idles fine but now it makes the "whirring" sound as soon as you hit the throttle. This is my nieces car so i'm unsure if this is normal becuase i'm rarely in it. Is this normal or should it not be making this noise at any rpm? I realize that a cogged timing belt or any drivebelt of this type should emit some audible noise. Thank you in advance.

The cam gears will only fit on one way, place the cam gear on the shaft and lay the cam in accordance to where the alignment mark should be, you have a margin to work with at this point, so it dose not have to be exact until the belt is on, a few degrees at this point is not an issue, i hope that is a bit clearer.

I just noticed this post on a google search, this engine has 4 cams, MHPAUTOS (allegedly an expert). There is one sprocket that controls 2 cams each. His question is how to line up the pair of cams in each head.

I have a 2001 Mazda 626 LX. The other day I ran the car to the store and then when I want to get back in to drive home the car started and then turned off. I have had the spark plugs replaced, the gas filter replaced and the air flow censer replaced and it still is doing the same thing. Have also checked the timing belt looked it and it is fine. I have stumped the guy that works on my car, he doesn't know what it could be. Do you?

The car was making weird sounds and i took it in they told me i needed a new waterpump and timing belt and quoted me $1000. I looked up the price of the parts online and it only came out to about $165. Even if they're charging $70 an hour for labor it comes out to almost 12 hours of work. Is that actually how long it will take or are they trying to take me for a ride.

Thanks for your help

on the cam for the exhaust side the first lobe should point to the exhaust manifold. the intake cam first lobe should point to the intake manifold. this should almost align two little marks on the spockets. then it is in time. let me if any more questions.

The I on the intake cam should line up with the E on the exhaust cam in the middle. They are a pain to hold still while you line up the cams and the crank sproket. I have a tool that fits in the sprokets to hold the cams still while lining up the crank.

Install the camshaft sprocket, aligning the dowel with the number 1 mark. Install the camshaft sprocket bolt. Hold the camshaft, on the cast hexagon, with the wrench and tighten the bolt to 35-48 ft. lbs. (47-65 Nm). Install the crankshaft sprocket and key. Align the keyway with the timing mark on the oil pump housing. Install the crankshaft sprocket bolt. Install the flywheel locking tool, if equipped with automatic transaxle, or place the shift lever in 4th gear and apply the parking brake, if equipped with manual transaxle. Tighten the bolt to 108-116 ft. lbs. (1-11 Nm). Make sure the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets are still aligned. Install the timing belt. If reusing the original timing belt, make sure it is installed in the same direction of rotation. Turn the tensioner clockwise with an Allen wrench and install the tensioner spring. Remove the holding tool from between the camshaft sprockets. Rotate the crankshaft 2 turns in the normal direction of rotation and align the timing marks. Make sure all marks are still correctly aligned. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and install the timing belt covers. Connect the negative battery cable.

Well I know this is an old post but....Is your 626 an auto or manual. There are two different distributors for that year. One with and external coil and one with out. The have been alot fo concerns with faulty distributo pick-up on these cars. So the best thing to do is to get it to a shop that knwos alot about Mazda's (dealer would be best)

I am trying to replace the timing belt that appears its teeth were stripped around the crankshaft pulley but its belt looks like in good condition. I am hesitant to run the engine with the new one because the camshaft pulleys do not turn as I set them up to their TDC marks as I try to turn them with the Crankshaft pulley. Crankshaft does turn but the camshaft pulleys don't appear to turn, am I getting paranoid? Should I just install the timing belt even though the camshafts don't turn to their TDC marks and just let them self adjust like my neighbor is telling me that they will if I just crank the engine?

you post is confusing! do you have the cams and crank set to their proper marks before you put on belt? you then put on belt, set belt tensioners, then when you try to test turn the engine by hand, the crank turns but cam does not?

Actually, I tried to turn the camshaft pulleys to their TDC marks but the timing belt looked like its teeth were going strip again because the camshaft pulleys were not turning. So, the question is, are the camshafts seized?

take belt off and try to turn cams by wrench? i would have thought you already did this anyway to align them before installing belt.

The all three pulleys(crankshaft and camshafts) according to ALL-DATA are supposed to be adjusted to their marks with the timing belt on. I really feel that the engine seized on top since the camshaft pulley sprockets do not turn. I managed to turn the crankshaft pulley to its mark but I dare not turn the sprockets since they are very tight-they are not turning either way.
