Do I have to change the whole engine, or can I simply replace the engine liners?
There is a crack in the engine liner and the mechanic said I have to buy a complete engine. I don't understand why.

Hi,

I don't believe the liners/cylinder sleeves are replaceable on this engine. If they are, the labor to perform the job and parts will likely be near the same cost as a new engine.

When the cylinder sleeves are replaced, the pistons and rings are as well. At that point, it would be a good idea to replace the connecting rod bearings, main engine bearings, and basically, overhaul the entire engine.

Let me know if that helps answer your question. If you have others, please let me know.

Take care,

Joe

Thanks for helping out with my query. Is it quite possible then that the sleeve could have broken the day after the mechanic fixed the cylinder head and we had the turbo reconditioned?

Hi,

The head and repairing the turbo should have no effect on the cylinder sleeves. A cylinder usually takes a lot of time to fail. As far as cracking, that rarely ever happens.

Let me know if I can help.

Hi,

If you found an engine block that is good, they should be able to switch your parts onto it.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,

Now that I have the engine block, do I need anything else or can a mechanic simply install the block into our car?

Hi,

If you only have an engine block, everything from your engine needs to be installed into it. For example, pistons, camshaft, crankshaft, and all internal components.

When you say block, I picture just an engine block with nothing put together in it.

Let me know.

Hiya,

I have a complete engine block that hasn't been tampered with. Everything that should be in it, is. The problem I have is that the mechanic here says I need to buy more engine parts in order to put in into our car. A simple exchange is not possible.
I don't know how difficult the job is of installing new engine block or what it really entails and if we should buy the complete engine of this car that we have the engine block from. The distribution system does not work on the engine and that is why they can sell us the engine block.
It will cost us a lot more money to but the engine but is it so much easier and less hours of work.

If that is the only thing, that makes sense. However, didn't they just repair the cylinder head and turbo? If they did, it should be able to be used on the new engine block unless it is a different size engine. The head gasket will certainly need to be replaced. That makes perfect sense when installing a cylinder head. However, if they repaired the old one, it should still be good.

Let me know.

Hi,

I believe that indicates an issue with the fuel injection system. (I think it's Spanish, correct?). The people who replaced the engine would have had that apart. Have you contacted them?

Hiya,

I took the car straight back but they still haven't contacted me as they don't know what the fault is. I need to be 2 steps ahead of them and have an idea what could have possibly gone wrong as all they had to do was install the engine they had me buy.

Hi,

It could indicate a fuel pressure issue, an injection issue, or anything related to the fuel supply. Was the vehicle still running okay with the light on?

It was running but not on full power. It went into limp mode.
Mechanic says it is related to the turbo.

A turbo issue can cause a power loss. By chance, did he indicate if there are diagnostic trouble codes that were found? If he didn't ask if he scanned the computer to see what was stored. Since the engine light was on, there should have been codes that would identify approximately where the problem was coming from.

Here is a video showing how it's done:

https://youtu.be/InIlnsjOVFA

If this hasn't been done, it should have been. I suspect they did it. Ask if they could let you know what codes were found.

Take care,

Joe

Yep, that code is a power boost code. Did you hear any exhaust leaks or odd sounds from the exhaust?
