The dealer recently recommended my mother-in-law have the emission system serviced. This was on a 4-year-old Civic with 30,000 miles on it. They also suggested a throttle body cleaning. Since when are these things that needed to be addressed at such low mileage?

Hello NUCKINGFUTS,

Love the name by the way lol.

No, they are just trying to upsell work. Unless you're running it with no air filter, the throttle body should be fine.

I am looking at the maintenance schedule for it right now. Every 25,000 miles the CVT fluid should be flushed. If anything, they should have recommended a CVT fluid change and an Air Filter change.

I don't see anything that says anything about cleaning the throttle body.

Service Advisors are salesman and get paid based on that. So, they were trying to sell her unneeded services to up the cost of the repair order. They get extra points the higher the repair order is in the end. Probably some kit from a company called BG.

I don't know what an emission service is supposed to be though. Did they give any other info on what exactly that was?

Can you tell me the sub-model? I want to make sure I am sending you the right information. Also is it a 2.0 or 1.5L?

Once I get that information from you, I will send you over the entire maintenance schedule for her vehicle.

Then she can print it out and bring it with her.

If you can look in either the owner's manual or it may have a separate service manual and see if you can find the maintenance schedule for it.

Thank you,
Brendon
