At first I thought the battery was dead, but when I got a jump start, it still wouldn't turn over, but lights etc, came on. Then it wouldn't do anything. No lights, nothing. So I took off the steering wheel cover so I could push the button by ignition switch, to release keys, but when I was messing around around the steering wheel, suddenly car cranked. So I replaced ignition switch, and still nothing, than discovered bad battery. Just replaced it last night and the lights will finally come on but it still wont crank and it wasn't showing a full charge on the battery. I left it disconnected over night so it wouldn't drain the new battery. Any thoughts?

Good morning,

Does the security light or theft light go off after about 10 seconds? If it stays on, it could be security.

I attached a wiring diagram for you to view. You will need a test light or voltmeter to do some checks.

Thank you for your help. Can I run another question by you? I think it's something in the steering column causing it to short out and drain the battery. I tried replacing the tumbler but I can't move it once inserted to put it in the correct spot, it keeps getting stuck. Do you know if Chevrolet usually have electrical issues like this? Because I can't seem to pin point what's actually causing the issue?

Okay, this could go back to the battery issue. If your battery voltage is low, it will cause the key to stick in the switch.

You must have 12.6 volts at the battery. If you have 12 volts or lower, the battery is almost dead.

I've already replaced the battery twice, but whatever electrical issue is going on is draining the power from the battery. Prior to replacing the battery, I changed the ignition switch, and it finally turned over, but when I went to restart it, it was completely dead again. I didn't think it was the battery at the time because it was only 3 weeks old, but eventually had it tested and it was totally dead. So that's when I bought another battery, eliminating that to be the cause of the issue. I also had been using the silver release button on the back lock cylinder to remove the keys from the ignition, but the last time I tried releasing them, the button wasn't firm like It should have been, and it was also extremely hot, which it should never be, in addition to being a little loose. It's at a shop now being looked at, but before paying extra money to get a new steering column, and on unnecessary labor, I wanted to get a second opinion. Based off of the information you know, do you have any ideas on what you think the problem is?

At this point, I have no idea since I cannot see it, touch it or diagnose it.

The best I can do for you is to help with what the shop tells you.

When they get back to you, get an estimate in writing with an explanation of the failure and post it to this question so I can review it with you and see if what they want to do makes sense.

Sorry, I forgot to include that the button was no longer releasing the keys, and when this issue 1st started, I was messing around with the steering wheel and for some reason pushed down on the back lock cylinder and I accidentally got the car started. So initially I taped it, because it started several times after that using that same technique. Sorry for the information overload, just making sure you have all of the details.

I understand completely.

Let me know what the shop says and make sure you get an estimate in writing.

Okay, he said he wants to replace the whole steering column, for $345.00, than an extra $150.00 to get it re-coded, but doesn't think that's the main issue.

Okay, why does he need to replace the column?

The price is not bad but what is the root cause of failure?

I'm not sure why he wants to replace the whole steering column. I think he needs to check the ignition switch and the lock cylinder to see if their installed correctly or just order new ones to see if that is the cause of the problem. He's not actually sure where the problem is originating, but wants to replace it anyways, my guess is just to be sure?

It sounds like a guess to me.

I would tell them that if it does not fix the issue, you will not pay for it. They are guessing on your dime.
