Starter stays engaged grinding against flywheel

I must shift into reverse to stop it. Then shut the car off, sometimes it will not. If off I remove battery cable wait, reattach. Now the car will start normally. Sometimes car will not shut off. I must pull out fuel pump fuse and turn off the engine. Next I do the battery cable deal and will shut off. Car drives fine but this problem is terrible. Mechanics are stumped. Help.

Hello,

It sounds like the ignition switch need to be replaced or the starter motor Bendix return spring is broken. Here is a guide to help you remove the starter motor once the motor is out shake it back and forth to see if the Bendix gear moves freely (it should not.

Here is a wiring diagrams for the ignition switch and a guide to check the connections and to make sure power is shut off:
