I have the same type of '86 - 150 truck with a slant 6, 2wd automatic. I thought the resistor by the coil was for the coil, but another post said the coil resistor is in the Spark Control Module computer. Mine is only about 2" away from the coil on the engine block, connected to the positive of the coil with about 5" of wire and only one connector is connected.
I have a Chilton's manual with diagrams, but it is hard to tell - it looks like a dark green wire comes from the Alternator to the Voltage Regulator, then a dk blue from there to the Oil Pressure Switch, (another dk blue wire leads to the fuse, dash light and back to the Oil Pressure Switch). From the Oil Pressure Switch to the Electronic Choke is a dk blue/red wire which also goes to the Electric Choke Heater, (is this the 'resistor' you're talking about?). V8 is a little different with the first dk blue splitting after the Voltage Regulator, so you'ld have to follow it to the Oil Pressure Switch.
Also, it kind of makes sense that it would be a part found at a dealer or parts store if it is cheap. Shipping a single part like that could cost more than the part itself.
