1997 Dodge Neon Air filter

My car has hesitation and my service engine light is on. I had spark plugs change, I've added carb injection cleaner to the fuel but my air filter is filthy. Put of the filter has been been eaten away. Would this cause the engine light to come on?

Also how do I know if I just might need a fuel filter?

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.
