1995 Dodge Neon 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 150k miles

75% of engine was replace about 2.5 years ago. Transmission was re-built 2 years ago. The problem I am having is my car sputters and just started backfiring the other day. It does this when I accelerate and while I am driving it sometimes just won't pick up speed. Is this something to do with the fuel filter or spark plugs? I don't really have a lot of money but, it needs to be fixed before something else goes wrong. I also put the fuel cleaner in it a few times. Please help.
Thank You So Much,
Tina

Backfiring can be associated with ignition timing. Have you checked the firing order?

Hi Tina, To me it sounds like you could be correct with the fuel filter, here is a guide to help as well with the fuel filter location so you can change that out.
