can I bypass the power steering unit with a smaller belt and if so how?

Now how about providing some additional information? If you don't have power assist at idle, that's common. It's due to a worn pump; it's the "ZF" style pump. You won't find a different pulley, and it's run by a serpentine belt that must match all the other pulleys on the engine.
