Check if you have brake light when stepped on brake pedal? check fuses , check brake light switch and its connector. If all okay the interlock solenoid is out here are the fuse locations and the interlock solenoid replacement instructions in the diagrams below.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-fuse

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

It sounds like the park lock solenoid isn't releasing. It receives power from the brake light switch so first, make sure the brake lights are coming on. If they are not, chances are the switch is bad or out of adjustment.

There is a park lock solenoid designed to not allow the vehicle to shift from park unless your foot is on the brake. It is actuated through the brake light switch. So this may sound like a stupid question, but are your brake lights working? If they are not, check the brake light switch on the top of the brake pedal. If it is bad, it won't allow you to shift from park.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

2002 Dodge Durango V8 All Wheel Drive 85000 miles

I have a '02 Dodge Durango and just received a recall notice on it, however I can't get my car in for about a month. The recall is to correct a problem that keeps the vehicle from shifting out of park. We are experiencing some very cold weather and my car has started locking up in park. I have found that heat will eventually unlock the safety switch. My question is: Is there an emergency release on the car that I can utilize if the heat doesn't work? I promise to get the car in for the recall

Hi:
Stupid question. When it doesn't come out of park, are your brake lights working? The brake light switch allows the shifter to move from park when the brake is depressed. If the switch is cold and not moving, you won't get it out of park.

Let me know.

Joe

There is an interlock switch located somewhere on or near the brake pedal.
This switch is there to ensure that you have your foot on the brake before you put the car in gear.
It sounds like the switch has either come unplugged or has malfuntioned.
Hope this helps!

Make sure the brake lights are working. You may have a sticking brake light switch. The switch that turns the brake lights on send power to the park lock solenoid to release it. Check that out the next time it happens.

Suspect the metal rod has popped out of the lever on the left side of the transmission. You can see it from underneath. Check the rest of the linkage too to see if a joint is disconnected.

I have a 1999 Durango SLT 4x4 that will not start in Park; nor does it lock in Park. It will start in reverse. Also, when you try to put it in park to turn off, it won't turn off. After you turn it off in reverse, you can put it in park & take key out; but it doesn't stay in park; it rolls. So I have to use emergency brake to keep it from rolling.

Adjust the shifter linkage or look for a loose bracket the linkage is attached to.
