'95 Dakota oil pressure drops in idle

I have a '95 dakota V-6 and lately the oil pressure drops and the oil light comes on whenever I am sitting at idle.
I took it to a shop and was told that it was because of worn bushings on the rod going to the oil pump giving the computer the wrong signal and that it would cost $500+ to fix.
I have never heard of this and was wondering if anyone else had either. Also, on the way home, my overdrive dropped out and will not engage. I checked the transmission fluid level and it is full.

Could one problem be causing the other?

The pressure sensor is at the back of the motor, almost under the firewall. Mine started doing the low pressure thing and also started to leak a little oil. The sending unit had gotten cracked and eventually blew.

Replace the sending unit to fix it.

Before then, you might want to go back to that mechanic with a hidden camera and have him give that excuse again. There's no way a computer can get a signal from a worn bushing on a push rod. The signal actually comes from the sending unit which measures the actual oil pressure and electrically sends that information.
