The EGR dash light is a scheduled emissions reminder, not proof the EGR valve failed. Reset the digital module and replace its 9-volt alkaline battery. Do not unplug the module connector, especially with the battery removed. Slide out the small blue module above the emergency brake, on a bracket below the headlight switch behind the instrument panel. Close the reset switch through the small hole with a screwdriver, replace the battery, and remount the module.
The owner of a 1987 Dodge Dakota with 70,000 miles has a check EGR dash light and could not clear it by disconnecting the battery. The expert explained that the light is a periodic emissions-maintenance reminder at set mileages and that the electronic module must be reset while its 9-volt battery is replaced. The owner could not find the module, and the expert located it as a small blue box above the emergency brake, mounted below the headlight switch on the back of the instrument panel.
